Children's Dentist in Sherwood Park

Looking for a children’s dentist in Sherwood Park? One that can offer comforting and comprehensive services from the first baby tooth to the last permanent tooth? Park Mall Dental Centre has children’s dentists in Sherwood Park that are ready to help your child build a good oral hygiene habit.

If your child becomes comfortable in the dentist’s chair at an early age, it is much less likely for your child to have dental anxiety later in life. The children’s dentists at Park Mall Dental Centre, as well as our associate clinics throughout Alberta in Edmonton, Fort McMurray, and Grande Cache, have the training necessary to help your children properly care for their teeth.

Should You Be Considering a Children’s Dentist?

Generally, we recommend your child visit the dentist within 6 months of their first tooth appearing or by one year of age. It’s important to visit a children’s dentist in Sherwood Park for dental exams as it can let you know if your child’s teeth cleaning routine at home is working, if there are any problems to fix before they become more serious, and to allow your child to get used to visiting the dentist. You can book an appointment for children’s dentist services at Park Mall Dental Centre.

How to Care for Your Child’s Teeth during Their Developmental Years

Even though baby teeth fall out, it is imperative to take care of them. You want your child to have good oral hygiene from the start so they can learn to bite, chew and speak properly.

Brushing: Before your child has any teeth grow in, you’ll want to wipe his or her gums with an infant gum massager, clean damp gauze, or a washcloth. This will help keep the gums healthy. When your child’s first teeth start to grow in, you should brush them with a soft bristled brush and water.

At the age of two you can start using fluoride-free toothpaste when brushing your child’s teeth. Use a very small dab of toothpaste because children tend to swallow it instead of spit it out. When your child is old enough not to swallow it, you can move on to fluoride toothpaste.

Flossing: As soon as two teeth touch each other, floss them once a day. This can be done with regular floss or plastic floss holders.

Permanent Teeth: Typically, children begin to lose their baby teeth around ages 6 or 7. When permanent teeth grow in you will still want to help your children maintain their oral hygiene until they get a little older. To help reduce cavities in these new teeth you can:

  • Give your children healthy snacks
  • Buy foods that are sugar-free
  • Serve sugary or starchy foods with meals rather than as snacks
  • Offer fewer snacks throughout the day
  • Brush your children’s teeth after snacks
  • Choose sugar-free gum if your children chew gum at all
