During the extraction, you should not feel any pain because the dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth, jawbone, and surrounding gums. You will likely feel a sense of pressure as the dentist moves the tooth to loosen it, but if you feel sharp pain, you should alert your dentist immediately so they can adjust the numbing agent.
For most simple extractions, the initial healing period takes about 7 to 10 days. During this time, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect the bone. While the “hole” may take a few weeks or months to fully close with new bone and gum tissue, most patients can return to their normal routine within a few days.
Stick to soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours. Good options include:
Avoid crunchy, spicy, or very hot foods, as well as anything with small seeds that could get stuck in the extraction site.
Using a straw creates suction in the mouth, which can dislodge the blood clot forming in the socket. If this clot is removed, it leads to a painful condition called dry socket, which exposes the underlying bone and nerves and delays healing. It is best to avoid straws for at least one week.
First 24 hours: Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting. You can gently brush your other teeth, but stay away from the extraction site.
After 24 hours: Gently rinse with warm salt water (about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water) several times a day to keep the area clean and reduce bacteria.
