Dental emergencies can be stressful, but seeking immediate care from a trained dentist is crucial for effective treatment. While hospital emergency rooms may provide temporary relief for pain, they lack the specialized training to address the root causes of dental issues. Whether you have a severe toothache, a fractured or knocked-out tooth, or any other urgent dental concern, At Park Mall Dental is here to help. Prompt treatment from an experienced emergency dentist can prevent further damage and save you time, pain, and money. We offer same- or next-day appointments for non-life-threatening dental issues and provide sedation to ensure your comfort throughout the process. If you’re in need of emergency dental care in Sherwood Park, don’t hesitate to contact us for immediate assistance.

We Treat a Wide Range of Dental Emergencies

At Park Mall Dental, we understand that dental emergencies can happen at any time. We provide prompt and effective care for a variety of urgent dental issues, including:

Urgent Care

Select Emergency Dentistry Treatment

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, it’s crucial to seek professional care right away. At Park Mall Dental, we offer a variety of emergency dentistry treatments to address your urgent needs, including:

Severe Toothache

A persistent, debilitating toothache lasting more than a couple of days may indicate deep decay or an infected tooth. If left untreated, the infection can spread, causing intense pain as the pulp inside the tooth deteriorates. A dentist will quickly identify the source of your toothache and take immediate action to relieve your discomfort. In many cases, an emergency root canal can treat the infection and save your tooth, preventing the need for extraction. Don’t wait—seek prompt care to prevent further damage and pain.

Dental Infection or Abscess

A dental abscess is a painful collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection that can form inside your tooth, gums, or jawbone. Symptoms include sudden, intense throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, and possible facial redness or swelling. If you have a tooth abscess, an emergency root canal is often the best treatment to eliminate the infection and save your tooth. For a gum abscess, a minor incision may be made to drain the pus and relieve pressure, providing temporary relief until further treatment can be performed.

Fractured Tooth

Tooth fractures can affect the crown, root, or both, with or without exposing the pulp. If the pulp is exposed, it often leads to significant pain and requires immediate care. In cases where tooth fragments are available, keeping them hydrated may allow us to reattach them. Root fractures typically require digital X-rays for precise diagnosis, unless the tooth is very loose and the fracture is near the gumline. Treatment for a root fracture may include root canal therapy, splinting, or extraction, depending on the severity and location of the fracture.

Dislodged (Luxated) Tooth

Luxation injuries, affecting 18–33% of permanent tooth injuries, occur when a tooth is pushed out of its normal position—forward, backward, or sideways—partially out of or into the socket. There are three main types of luxation: intrusive, extrusive, and lateral. Treatment options depend on the type of luxation and may include passive repositioning (for intrusive luxation), manual repositioning, intentional replantation, orthodontic repositioning, or splinting of the luxated tooth. Prompt treatment is essential to preserve the tooth and surrounding tissue.

Knocked Out (Avulsed) Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is a serious dental emergency that requires immediate care. While primary (baby) teeth cannot be re-implanted, permanent teeth can often be saved with prompt action. Do not touch, rub, or clean the tooth root, as this can damage the periodontal ligament and decrease the chances of successful re-implantation. Call our office right away and, if possible, place the tooth in milk to preserve it until you can get to us. Splinting is typically used to stabilize and treat a knocked-out tooth after it’s re-implanted.

Broken or Missing Restoration

Losing a crown or filling can cause discomfort, especially when biting or chewing, but if there are no signs of infection, you may be able to wait until your next scheduled visit. However, if you experience severe pain, facial or jaw swelling, fever, or difficulty opening your mouth, call our office immediately. These could be signs of an infection, which can spread and lead to serious complications if left untreated. Prompt care is essential to prevent further issues.

Dry Socket

After a tooth extraction, a blood clot typically forms to protect the underlying bone and nerves. However, if the clot doesn’t form properly or is dislodged, it can expose sensitive tissue, leading to a condition known as dry socket. If you experience severe pain one to three days after your extraction, contact us immediately. We will clean out the socket to remove any debris, apply a medicated dressing, and repeat the process as needed to relieve your discomfort and promote healing.

Gentle and Affordable Emergency Dentistry

Accidents can happen at any time, so it’s important to be prepared. If you experience a dental emergency, call us right away. We’ll help you determine if it’s a true dental emergency and offer instructions on how to care for your injury until you can come into our office. Instead of rushing to the ER, where dental professionals aren’t available, we can usually accommodate you the same or next day. Our goal is to accurately diagnose the issue, relieve your discomfort, and restore your tooth’s function. We accept insurance and offer third-party financing to make emergency care more affordable.

Dental or Medical Emergency?

If you’ve been in an accident and are experiencing neck or head pain, severe trauma, dizziness, or uncontrollable bleeding, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention. Call 911 so you can be properly assessed and transported to the nearest medical facility. ER or immediate care medical personnel are best equipped to handle these types of medical emergencies. For dental injuries, we can help address the issue once your immediate medical needs are taken care of.
